"Three or four years will be necessary to complete the work .... I have expended in the 15 years occupied in these studies, about $25,000, & by the time I have finished the work, the amount must rise to nearly $30,000."
"I cannot revise, correct, copy & prepare the work for the press without some aid ...."
"I am now 63 years of age, & after a life of stdious toil, I wish to be able to publish the fruits of my labor."
"... if you deem it inexpedient to interest yourself in my undertaking, & give voluntary aid, you would be pleased to inclose this letter to me by mail, without communicating its contents."
Watermark: Butlers and Ward, 1818 -- see Gravell. American watermarks (2002), p. 247.
Gift of Mary Varick. Inasmuch as Varick apparently retained this letter, it is likely that he did, in fact, contribute to Webster's Dictionary.
