Note
Because of various "disappointments in my pursuits for three or four years past, from a long and tedious illness ... I have been placed in circumstances of great perplexity and embarrassment", Walker makes "supplication to the Society of the Cincinnati for some temporary aid."
He mentions having sent an additional letter "to my worthy brother Lovell" [i.e., James Lovell, Massachusetts line?] requesting his support and encloses a letter of support from "my worthy friend Squire Eggleston [i.e. Azariah Egleston of the Massachusetts line?]... addressed to [Lincoln]" (not present)
Walker, who served in the 4th Massachusetts Regiment, was an original member of the Massachusetts Society of the Cincinnati; Lincoln was at the time of this letter, president of that constituent society.
Gift of John Richards; typescript of letter in case file.
