Note
The Alexander Hamilton plate is not that of the American statesman, but rather of an Alexander Hamilton of Sussex, England or of Scotland. For an example of the statesman's plate, see the vertical file under Hamilton. See also case file for further documentation.
Several generaltions of William Jeffries Chewning were physicians; it is unclear to which this bookplate relates. Some were members of the Virginia Society of the Cincinnati.
Tradition holds that Dr. John Jeffries was the surgeon who recognized Warren's body at Bunker Hill. See C.D. Allen. American Book-plates (1894), no. 426. Though unsigned, the plate may be the work of Joseph Callender, a student of Paul Revere.
The W. Jackson bookplate may be that of Major William Jackson, an original member of the State Society of the Cincinnati of Pennsylvania -- see Allen. American book-plates (1894), no. 420.
Gift of W. J. Chewning family 1956
