Record of orders issued by the officers of Capt. Varnum company of militia during their tour in Rhode Island, August, 1778; orders mostly in Varnum's hand, but some entries obviously made by his first lieutenant, Temple Kindall for the preparation for the Battle of Rhode Island; orders includes appointments of aid-de-camps & officers for the day, disposition of various units & General Sullvian's speech on the eve of their march to Newport.
Varnum served in the militia & received his commission as captain in May 1776. His company became part of the militia brigade called to join General Sullivan's troops during the Battle of Rhode Island.
