"Your letter of July 15 informing me of my election to honorary membership in the N.Y. State Society of the Cincinnati has been received, and it is with great pleasure and a high sentiment of the honor conferred that I hasten to reply to you.. This is the more truly gratifying as being tendered to me by a venerated soldier of the Revolution, whose cordial grasp of the hand I regret I am not permitted to meet."
"The warm congratulations offered by you for the achievements of the army are, in the name of all the officers and men, gratefully acknowledge...." The congratulations offered were as the result of Taylor's successes during the Mexican-American War, in recognition of which Taylor had been promoted brevet Major General a few months earlier.
