The return lists 6 conductors, shows who was fit, unfit, or sick, how many 4-horse and 3 horse teams, and lists casualties.
The named conductors are John Davis, Ben. Smith, Broad[hurst?] & Seaman [or Leaman?], Thomas Scott, Leitheiser & Fesig, and Wm. Foster
This return may reflect the urgent need for wagons, horses, and oxen to accomplish the march to Yorktown the previous year. Under orders from Lafayette,the governor of Virginia had been asked in mid 1781 to provide wagons and horses for the French artillery and for the use of French field officers. Although wagons and horses had been promised, none were on hand when the French fleet under Admiral de Grasse arrived with troops from the West Indies, and they were unable to move for lack of wagons to transport their baggage.
At lower left: Messrs Wadsworth & Carter. Wadsworth, who had acted as Washington's Commissary General until Dec. of 1779, became commissary to the French army and navy and as such worked to supply those forces during the remaining years of the war.
