On verso: Weekly return of the 4th Mass.ts Regt Octr 5th 1781.
In several sections: Light companies (1st Popes, 6th Drews, 4th Haskells 8th Fullers, 9th Banisters, 7th Holbrooks, 5th Moores, 2nd Larneds.) For each, officers present and fit for duty, Rank & file, Numbers wanting to compleat, and Alterations since the lst report. Another shows numbers but not names of the sick present, absent, on duty, on command, on extra serice, absent with leave, absent without leave, prisoners of war, etc. A third section show numbers on extra servcie, on command, and on duty present. 147 were "fit for action"; 6 were "wanting clothes"; 5 were "wanting arms" In this group, 2 were prisoners of war on Long Island: Capt. Lebbeus Drew and Surgeon James Mann.
Though the location of the regiment at this time is not certain, a few places can be eliminated because of notices of men "on extra service" with officers elsewhere, or "on command" at West Point, Stoney Point, Dobbs ferry, with General Washington's guard, , or at Fish Kill.
The 4th Massachusetts was assigned to the 1st Massachusetts Brigade, an element of the Highlands Dept. -- R.K. Wright. The Continental Army, p. 206
Shepard, Felt, Fuller, Hamlin, Haskell, Holbrook, Moore, Pope, Pratt, Rice, Spring, Town, and Webb were all original members of the Massachusetts Society of the Cincinnati
Officers absent by general order: Col. William Shepard in Springfield; Lt. Col. James Mellen in N.Jersey; Major Nathan Rice and Capt. George Webb, Southward; Seth Banister in Springfield, Elnathan Haskel, West Point; Lt. Simeon Spring, Ensigns Jacob Town and Ephraim Covill, sent southward; Lemuel Snow, recruiting at Boston; Samuel Henley, sick; Lt. Joel Pratt and Africa Hamlin, on command in N. Jersey; Lebbeus Drew and Surgeon James Mann, prisoners of war on Long Island.
