Journal documenting the service of the French ship Souverain, commanded by Jean-Baptiste de Glandevès, during French naval operations in the American Revolutionary War. Beginning with the departure of Guichen's squadron from Brest in February 1780, the journal records the fleet's movements in the Caribbean and the naval engagements between Guichen and Admiral Rodney in May 1780, including the effects of tropical disease on the crews. Later entries document operations under the comte de Grasse, including an engagement on 5 September 1781. The journal includes an order of battle for Guichen's fleet and drawings showing the positions of the fleets under de Grasse and Admiral Hood off Basse-Terre in 1782 and of the Earth.

Jean-Baptiste de Glandevès du Castellet (1728-1803), known as the Commandeur de Glandevès, was a French naval officer who rose to chef d'escadre. During the American Revolution, he commanded the 74-gun Souverain in operations under the comte de Guichen and the comte de Grasse, including the engagements with Admiral Rodney off Martinique in 1780, the Battle of the Chesapeake in 1781, and the Battle of the Saintes in 1782. A Knight of Malta and Commander of Saint-Louis, he later served as commander of the navy at Toulon.
