Smith served in Capt. John Lacey's Company of the Fourth Pennsylvania Battalion, under command of General Anthony Wayne; recorded encampments in New York area, the battalion's journey up the Hudson & Lake George to join the Fort Ticonderoga garrison under command of General Benedict Arnold.
Detailed records of each day, the site of the encampment, the daily password & countersign; daily orders from the commander, the brigade commander, courts-martial, directions for march & resolutions of the Continental Congress.
Apparently lacking several leaves at front & back; many leaves folded at corners with loss of some text.
Correspondence from a descendant of Samuel Smith in the 1930s & some genealogical material removed to case file.
