Abbott directs Backus "to furnish three men from the Company under your Command, Forthwith ... to form a guard to conduct a number of Prisoners From this town to Hartford or Weathersfield."
Col. Samuel Abbott is probably the man who served the 20th Regiment of the Connecticut Militia, promoted from Lt. Col. in May 1777.
Elijah Backus is addresssed as "Captain of 2nd Alarm Company, in 20th Regt."
