Note
Captain Varick submits his resignation from his New York company to the commander-in-chief because it conflicts with his current post of military secretary to General Philip Schuyler. By the Continental Congress resolution of July 11, 1776, army officers were prohibited from holding more than one office. Varick bacame Washington's recording secretary later.
