Regarding payment for medical expenses.
Knox, as senior officer of the Continental Army, writes to the paymaster general "The contract having ceased to operate after the first instant & there being no mode established by which the sick, either in the Hospital or belonging to the Regiment of Infantry or Corps of Artillery, which are retained in service can be supplied with such small Articles as are essential for their comfort ...I am there for under the necessity of directing that you advance a sum of money for the purpose, from time to time as it may be wanted ..."
