"The third of January one thousand seven hundred and eighty. Received of Mr. John Ritchie Master of Providence of Newcastle now at Portsmouth the sum of seven pounds, seventeen shilling & none pence for the use of Greenwich Hospital ..."

At left upper corner: seal of "Register Office for Seamen"; "No. 31."
Docketed on verso: "Revd. John Beverley Green Hospital Jany 9th 1781, £7.17.9"
The Providence was a newly constructed ship under contract of the British navy to transport troops and supplies to America during the revolutionary war. The Royal Hospital at Greenwich was supported by monthly levies taken from the salaries of navy seamen.
