Context: Mount Independence is located across Lake Champlain from Fort Ticonderoga. In 1776, British General Carlton, intending to take both sites then occupied by the Americans, retreated to Canada after Arnold's forces induced him to regroup. The next year, however, he returned with superior forces and the Americans were then forced to retreat.
Names listed: Capt. Graves, Capt. May, Capt. Parker, Capt Cannon, Capt. Kellogg, Lt. Cooper. Total number of troops: 116. Several of these captains are listed in Massachusetts soldiers and sailors of the Revolutionry War; thus, the regiment in question is probably a Massachusetts regiment..
On verso: Recd of Qr Master Colton twelve cattrigs [cartridges?] for ye youse of the Continants [Continentals?]. Recd per me, Mt. Independant [sic] D White Adjt 25 June 1777
