On verso: "I do certify ... that the offers, non commissioned officers and privates who appeared this day ... are bona fide engaged in the service of the United Colonies & are to receive pay according to the ranks they hold in this roll ... Isaiah Wool Capt Lieut."

Context: After the Dec., 1775, siege of Quebec, Commander Benedict Arnold withdrew his remaining men, including this company of artillery, to a camp outside the city; but in January, 1776, he began to withdraw his forces as Burgoyne's British reenforcements started to arrive. Twenty eight of the montrosses listed on this Feb. roll are designated "Prisoners in Quebec" as are 1 captain (John Lamb), 3 bombardiers, 2 first lieutenants, and 1 sergeants. Several additional men are listed as having "died in hospital." Shortly afterwards, the unit was reorganized and redesignated as Capt. -Lt. Isaiah Wool's Artillery Detachment.
