"Militia no. 63" at head of title.
"Know all men by these presents, that I Nathaniel Davidson, Ensign in the Battalion of Supplementary Militia for the County of Northumberland, am held, and firmly bound, unto our sovereign Lord George, The Third, of Great Britain ... the sum of one thousand pounds ..."--p. [1]
Partially printed and filled-in agreement sets the condition of service for Nathaniel Davison, who also signed a "Declaration" that his appointment as paymaster to the Northumberland Battalion was "without any Recompence, Reward or Gratuity therefore given, paid, secured, or promised…."
Signed & sealed by Davison; witnessed by Charles William Biggs & Matthew White Ridley.
Fears of French invasion, militias were established all over Britain, particularly in coastal counties such as Northumberland; bond cancelled later, when the threat passed & the militia disbanded.
