Note
Coxheath Camp, in Kent, England, was a model training camp for the British army, established during the years of the American revolutionary war. This recipe is for a long-simmered meat-and-vegetable soup and recommends various herbs and spices to give variety to a soup "that will not cost more than a penny for each person for a good meal ... be a very wholesome and pleasant food, and will serve very well at the tables of the rich, as well as the poor."
