On verso: Sworn & subscrib'd before me, this 5th day of December 1781/ Wm. Irvine B. Genl. Irvine was in command at Fort Pitt as of Sept. 24, 1781. His signature appears in a different ink, as does "5th." It also appears beneath the docketed title. A line of type, possibly from a bookseller's catalog, is pasted to the verso of the document: Irvine, Brig. Gen. Wm.
Also on verso: We do swear that the within muster roll is a true state of the company & detatchment with out fraud ... J. Craig Capt. Artillery [and] James Lloyd, Capt.
Appearing on the roll in addition to the 4 commissioned officers are 6 serjeants, 5 gunners, 20 matrosses (4 of whom died; one in August, 3 in September), 5 corporals, 1 bombadier, and 7 artificers.
Officers listed: Isaac Craig, captain; William Martin, Capt. Lieut.; James Lloyd, Do (i.e., Capt. Lieut.); Ezekiel Howell, Lieut.
"On 1 January 1781 on the reorganization of the army Howell and most of the Pennsylvania offers of the Second Artillery were transferred to the Fourth Artillery Regiment (Proctor's) which had been raised in the Commonwealth." -- John Kilbourne. Virtutis praemium: The men who founded the State Society of the Cincinnati of Pennsylvania, p. 466.
The reorganization of the artillery units in August, fell after the July report covered in this roll; thus the "Capt. Isaac Craigs company belonging to the 4th or Pennsylvania regiment ..." -- see Robert K. Wright. The Continental Army (1983), p. 339.
All the officers mentioned were original members of The State Society of the Cincinnati of Pennsylvania.
