Ms. describing and analyzing an account of naval maneuvers and operations under the command of the comte d'Orvilliers in 1772 along the coasts of Spain and Portugal, carrying out trials in signals and formations. The commanders of the operations and several of their captains became leading figures in France's participation in the American Revolution; 2nd part of ms. discusses the actions of the squadron relating to a published work, Bigot de Morogues's "Tactique Navale, ou, Traité des évolutions et des signaux." This part includes 7 plans of dispositions.
Bound in vellum.
Bookplate: Monr. de la Prevalaye, Officier de marine (could refer to either a father or son). The senior La Prevalaye served in Canada and the Antilles and became governor of Brest; he organized the French fleet's departure for America in 1778; young La Prevalaye served under d'Estaing and later de Grasse during the revolutionary war & became an original member of the Société des Cincinnati de France.
