To an unknown recipient.
Having been appointed colonel of the Sixth Pennsylvania Regiment in Continental Army, Irvine writes: "I was favored last night with marching orders. My destination give me great pleasure as New York it seems to be the seat of war, we will learn discipline, &c." He also complains about shortages from the commissary: "…instead of two pair of drawers for each man there is not enough for one ... These things trouble me as the men will grumble to march half naked ..." In a postscript he notes: "Captain Greer is now in town by whom I wrote to the Committie [sic] of Safety for money which we can not march without …"
