Note
Invitation on behalf of Emperor Taisho to the Andersons to a lunch at the Imperial Palace. Invitation in Japanese with imperial Chrysanthemum seal embossed at top center.
With invitation is a typed caption with a translation and description of the invitation.
The translation provided in the caption is as follows, "Their Excellencies The American Ambassador and Mrs. Larz Anderson. By order of Their Majesties the Emperor and Empress I have [sic] the honor to request your presence at a luncheon at the Imperial Palace on February first at 12.30 PM. Count Chiaki Watanabe, Minister of the Imperial Household, January 29th Taisho 2nd Year (1913). Civil Officials shall wear ordinary dress (frock coat). Army and Navy officers ordinary dress uniform- in all cases with mourning. Ladies shall wear ordinary mourning dress. Should official business or illness prevent attendance the Bureau of Ceremonies should be immediately informed."
The description reads, "Luncheon at Court in honor of the American Ambassador and Mrs. Larz Anderson - it being the custom at the Japanese Court to give luncheons of honor to newly appointed Ambassadors."
The mourning referenced in the dress specifications may be mourning for the previous Emperor Meiji who died six months earlier in July 1912.
