Olney acknowledges the receipt of Anderson's letter of resignation saying that "your resignation is a loss to our foreign service."
Richard Olney was the Secretary of State from 1895 to 1897 under President Grover Cleveland. Anderson was resigning his post as Secretary of the United States Embassy at Rome to return to the US and marry fiancee Isabel Weld Perkins.
