MacVeagh conveys his " warm appreciation for the efficiency and fidelty with which you [Anderson] have discharged your duties as Secretary" and leaves the Embassy "again in your charge with entire confidence."
MacVeagh was the U.S. Ambassador to Italy from 1893 to 1897, Larz Anderson served as first secretary under MacVeagh from 1894 till MacVeagh's resignation in early 1897. Anderson then served as charge d'affaires until the arrival of a new ambassador.
