A more modern rendering of the classic scene of Washington and his officers. In this one, Washington is shown with his left hand on Maj. Gen. Henry Knox's shoulder as he shakes his hand. Printed below the lithograph are the names of the central grouping of officers: Brig. Gen.l James Clinton, Brig. Gen.l Van Cortlandt, Maj. Gen.l Israel Putnam, Washington, Commr. in Chief, Maj. Gen.l Henry Knox, Maj. Gen.l Benj. Lincoln, Maj. Gen.l Nathaniel Greene, Col. John Lamb, Col. Humpreys, A.D.C. to Washington, and Maj. Gen.l Baron Von Steuben.
The artist has painted the likenesses of the officers from available portraits. For example, Baron von Steuben is pictured wearing the eagle of the Society of the Cincinnati as it appears in several portraits of him. However, he would not have had his eagle in 1783 since they did not arrive in the United States until 1784!
The print was removed from a frame for storage in the Library collection.
