Note
Rebus letter (a letter that combines words and pictures to make its sentences), refers to the ill-fated Carlisle Peace Commission organized by William Eden to negotiate a settlement with the Americans in 1778. In words and pictures it says: "You silly old woman that you have sent a dove to us is very plain to draw our attention from our real interests ...," and is signed "I am your greatly injured Daughter America."
This the 2nd of the series of 2 rebus letters issued by Matthew & Mary Darly in May 1778, satirizing the peace commission; reply of 1st letter entitled "Britainnia to America." (P&E L2009F164).
Darly published 4 satires on the episode; first published under title "The commissioners" (call no. P&E L2017F129m); 2nd "The commisioners [sic] interview with congress" (call no. P&E L2018F25m); 3rd & 4th rebus letters.
