Rebus letter (a letter that combines words and pictures to make its sentences), portraying Britannia as a mother urging her daughter America to jilt the Frenchman she is planning to marry and stop rebelling. This political satire refers to the American alliance with France and concerns Great Britain's last attempt to end the American Revolution through diplomatic means by sending a delegation known as the Carlisle Peace Commission to Philadelphia.
Darly published 4 satires on the episode; first published under title "The commissioners" (call no. P&E L2017F129m); 2nd "The commisioners [sic] interview with congress" (call no. P&E L2018F25m); 3rd & 4th rebus letters.
This is first of 2 rebus letters issued in May 1778, 2nd letter issued a week after, reply from the American colonies entitled "America to her mistaken mother." (P&E L2009F138m)
