Description
1 color photographic print ; 41 x 27 cm.
Call Number
P&E L2009D6 [mod]
Note
Head and shoulders to the left, in uniform. He wears the eagle of the Society of the Cincinnati on the left buttoned lapel of his jacket.
It is difficult to establish information about the original portrait. Clearly, it is a copy painted after the portrait of Perry by Rembrandt Peale ca. 1813-1814. This is not a photograph of Peale portrait. Both the artist and the medium are unknown.
This appears to be some kind of gelatin photograph of a color portrait on a soft paper. Below the portrait but included in the photograph is a 1/2" manila strip with the printed title. The type face is modern and similar to one used in publications like Harpers Weekly.
This portrait was removed from its frame for storage in the library collection. It was assessioned as 72.89.
Oliver Hazard Perry was made an honorary member of the Society of the Cincinnati by the state of New York in 1813 and by the state of Rhode Island in 1899.
