The original pastel on paper portrait is 9 inches by 7 inches and is attributed to James Sharples, Sr. It may have been done in 1796 or 1797 when Sharpes was working in Philadelphia. However, it might have been done about 1800, after Sharples moved to New York. The portrait was listed in the artist's 1802 catalogue and was in the group of portraits Ellen Sharples gave to her stepson Felix in 1811 when she returned to England. It was among the pastels Felix later left with the Winder family to secure a loan that he never repaid. That collection was eventually purchased by the City of Philadelphia in 1896 and became the Sharples Independence Hall collection. Currently it is on display in the Independence Historical Park. This photograph was made of the original portrait at Independence Hall.
Philip Van Cortlandt was an original member of the Society of the Cincinnati from the state of New York.
