Note
Witness: Ch.s Jackson
As John Webb's attorney, Pendleton indemnifies one John McQueen against a $2,994.30 debt due John Webb incurred by the purchase of lands in Georgia. He also asserts Webb's claim to 1,880 acres of land "on the south side of Crooked River .... which I purchased at sheriff's sale afterwards, as the property of Jacob Weed deceased...."
"Whereas Henry Osborn, James Armstrong, James Seagrove and John Webb, did by an agreement in writing dated the twenty second day of December one thousand seven hundred and eight six agree to obtain by grant, by purchase or otherwise as much land as they could obtain, not exceeding two hundred thousand acres, in the counties of Glynn and Camden in the State of Georgia ... and whereas the said John Webb did assign and transfer his right to the interest he had in the said contract ... by his deed of assignment dated the tenth day of April one thousand seven hundred and eighty nine."
See also MSS 189-F M MB for a related document listing Henry Osborn, James Armstrong, James Seagrove, Jacob Weed, and John Webb.
Pendleton, who had previously represented Georgia in Congress, moved in 1796 to New York City to practice law.
It is likely that the John Webb mentioned herein is Capt. John Webb of Connecticut. Like Pendleton, he was an aide-de-camp to General Nathanael Greene during the American Revolution and because of this association may have hired Pendleton as his attorney after the war.
