Note
Hall writes regarding the possibility of Elwood Fisher's appointment as Bank Commissioner. In vitriolic terms, he denounces Fisher's qualifications, intellect, and moral character. In closing, he states, "I write to you on this subject freely because I suppose you do not know this man, and will be glad to get information."
This letter was written by James Hall-- a prominent Ohio citizen having been at various times a banker, lawyer, judge, state treasurer of Illinois, and a writer of history and fiction. Hall became cashier of the Cincinnati Commercial bank in 1835 and thus would have a vested intrust in banking regulation in the state.
Hall was married to Mary Louise (Louisa) Anderson, the sister of Latham's wife, Maria Anderson.
Allen Latham was elected to the Ohio state senate in 1841.
