A letter of affection and gratitude, apparently written after Pendleton's official letter of resignation from the army: "When I compare my present, with my former situation and prospects, I hope you will permit me at least on this affecting occasion, to say that the happiness of the latter is alone owing to your generosity, your advice and that friendship which gave them an entire influence on my mind."

Both the author and the recipient were original members of the Society of the Cincinnati.
