Writes to his father of the safe arrival of himself and his brother after a twenty day voyage. He does not look forward to upcoming journey up the Magdalena river and short stay in Bogota before attending the Congress at Panama. The Panama Congress was the first attempted pan-American meeting of nations. Proposed by Simon Bolivar, the goal was to create a league of American republics, but facing opposition from many quarters the plan failed.
Anderson remarks on the local elections saying, "The election for President and Vice President is now going on. It is believed that the vote for Bolivar will be unanimous, but the election of V. President will probably come before Congress." Simon Bolivar was president of the short lived country of Gran Columbia (1821-1830) which covered most of present day Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, and Panama.
Richard Clough Anderson Jr was the first American minister to Colombia, but died en route on the way to the Panama Congress.
Includes original address and remnants of wax seal. Fragmented, very fragile.
