"This day David Downie soldier in the Dundee volunteers Atholl Highlanders was by the Provost, Magistrates and Town Council of Dundee admitted a free Burgess of this Burgh with all and sundry Liberties Priviledges and Immunities thereto belonging He having given his Oath in common Form. Extrated by Thomas Davidson clerk.”
On verso: "Burgess Ticket infavour of David Downie Atholl Highlanders, dated 23d March 1778"
Accompanied with: [1]. letter from his grandson, George M. Downie, January 18, 1900; [2]. embroidered silk pocket book with a typed affidavit stating that it was made for David Dundee by Mary Young “the silk used was from dresses of herself and her sisters. He carried it along with him throughout the campaign, i.e., from 1778 to 1783.” & with watercolor sketch (undated) of an Atholl Highlander.
Atholl Highlanders were formed in 1777 as the 77th Regiment of Foot by John Murray, Fourth Duke of Atholl, to relieve other regiments serving in North America.
