Note
Writes to decline, for health reasons, an invitation to meet the Whigs of western Massachusetts in August, yet feels "deeply the importance of the approaching election; it appears to me that an Epoch has arrived in the political history of our country, which ... gives more importance to the Election of President and Vice President than has existed since the adoption of the Federal Constitution."
Lawrence continues: "Shall WE, Whigs of 44, not be wanting in patriotic devotion to the best interests of our common country, if we do not carry out the principles bequeathed to us by the Whigs of 76?"
The Whig candidate, Henry Clay, was defeated by the Democrat, James K. Polk.
Lawrence, a Boston textile merchant, did attend the Convention of 1844 as a delegate.
