Note
"One mile beyond this place, on the way to Mores [i.,e. Col. Moore's?], I met the bearer of this [not included] with two or three other men, belonging to Genl. Butler's detachment."
"The packet from Baron Steuben I took from a man who took it from an express, who was taken sick on the road. I thought best to send the bearer with it, & the above information. Agreeable to your direction I shall go in search of General Butler ... & hasten his march as much as I possibly can; he has neglected to leave his baggage behind. Of consequence it must retard his march."
Context: General Nathanael Greene was camped at High Rock Ford on this date, awaiting reinforcements before engaging Cornwallis or Tarleton before the battle of Guilford Courthouse. General John Butler had taken over command of North Carolina militiamen and joined Greene "on or about 10 March" -- Papers of General Nathanael Greene, vol. VII, p. 421 note 3. See also, on the same page, Greene's March 10 letter to Col. Henry Lee: "I am anxiously waiting for the arrival of the North Caro[li]nia Militia."
Not in The papers of General Nathanael Greene.
Watermark: Dove
Gift of the descendents of George Hunt Pendleton: Arthur Tilghman Brice, Alice Joline, and Julia Brice Chubb, children of Jan Frances Pendleton Brice.
