Rumsey was at the time serving in the Cecil Co. militia.
Reports snow delays but thinks "four of the companies will set of[f] in the morning or some time of the day, commanded by Colo. Hollingsworth and Maj. Strawbridge. Gen.l Gates thinks it's best my staying to set of[f] with the other companies as two of them are in town and Hezehiah South's expected tomorrow." Hollingsworth, Parker, Strawbridge, and South all served with Rumsey in the Elk Battalion of the Cecil Co., Md. militia at the time -- see Henry C. Peden. Revolutionary patriots of Cecil County Maryland (1991)
There is a letter to the Counsil [sic] of Safety that our men has taken about 20 foraging wagons and a few prisoners and that Gen.l How is at Brunswick with a small reinforcement and are on move but not known which way ...."
