Note
Context: The British, having occupied Boston, evacuated that city in March, 1776. The Massachusetts Provincial Council, however, feared further attacks in the area.
"The House of Representatives, by a message of this day having declared agreeable to a resolve of the General Court that it is necessary for the safety & welfare of this colony, that the Heights of Hull, Petticks Island, Long Island, Moon Island & Houghs Neck shou'd be immediately taken possession of by our troops, in order to pevent the Enemy from taking possession of the same; & to clear Nantaskett Harbour of their ships; & the House apprehending that it may be necessary to call in a part of the militia for that purpose, & for securing ... the other harbours within the capes have earnestly recommended to this Board immediately to give orders to the commanding officer of the militia to call in so many of the for the purposes aforesaid....
From 1772 to 1776, Lincoln was lieutenant colonel of the 3rd Regiment, Suffolk militia; in 1776, he was promoted to brigadier general, then major general, then commander of all Massachusetts troops in the Boston area.
