Lewis' partner "Parker" is not otherwise identified.
Clermont was the name of the Livingston/Lewis estate in New York.
"The embarrassment Mr. Parker and myself have experienced from your removal to the southward, being thereby prevented from receiving of you those supplies of cash which we otherwise should have done, have induced us to transmit a rough scetch [sic] of our acc.t ... on which we earnestly request you to send us the ballance that we may be enabled to discharge our debts ... for which our creditors are very clamorous."
Lewis' chief concers are with quantities and cost of flour and forage.
"Our reports here of your operations are many and various. We are led to believe you have destroyed both the British fleet and army. May your successes be as brilliant as they are reported to be, and may you return crowned with laurels, in which case, our enemies may be induced to sue for the olive.."
"During most of the war. Lewis was posted in Albany, often using his private financial resources to obtain military supplies." -- Francis J. Sypher, Jr. New York State Society of the Cincinnati (2004), p. 267
Jeremiah Wadsworth and John Carter [i.e., John Barker Church] were instrumental in equipping and provisioning the troops of both the Continental and French armies during the Yorktown Campaign.
