Note
Though the signature and a few other lines are in Sargent's hand, the body of the letter is probably written by an amanuensis.
Detailed instructions for the sale of real and personal property, including "Negroes [who] must be sold to good masters." at Gloster Place [i.e. Gloucester Plantation, near Natchez, where he is buried] and the Vale plantation. Sargent had settled in the Mississippi territory after serving as Secretary of the Northwest Territory.
These instructions may have been intended as a codicil to Sargent's will or as directives to his executor.
James Brown was a stockholder in the Ohio Company, of which Sargent was a stockholder and secretary.
