Note
Gwathmey discusses trouble with Hercules, presumably a chronic runaway slave. He says, "I fear I shall be obliged to do what I should long since have done but for the objections of Mr. Anderson! He preferred hiring or any other disposition being made of the Boy rather than sell him out of the hearing of his Father." He notes finding him "entirely deranged, the effects no doubt of habitual intoxication."
Gwathmey states he would rather hire Hercules to Bates and says he would be obliged to the recipient if "you could get him in there." He says Hercules is so poorly clad because "it was the only successful plan resorted to to keep him at home."
Gwathmey notes that he has heard nothing from Mr. Anderson or family since they left Carracas.
George Clark Gwathmey was the nephew of Richard Clough Anderson and both cousin and brother-in-law of Richard Clough Anderson Jr. as RCA Jr. married his cousin Elizabeth Gwathmey.
