Note
Transmitting letter promised to Mr. Cheves which was delayed by "an attack of fever" since his return from Columbus. Clay also asks Longworth to send him fruit trees and a bill for them in the fall as well as "a few scions of the Paracanthea" from General Taylor.
Nicholas Longworth was an early millionaire and prominent horticulturist of his time; in particular he is known for establishing grape growing in the United States. He was the father-in-law of Larz Anderson I, grandfather of Nicholas Longworth Anderson, and great-grandfather of Larz Anderson III.
