Note
Anderson writes to his mother that he is awaiting his commission in New York. He says that he has written to his brother Larz and hopes that the commission will arrive soon as he must wait either until it comes or "the expiration of the time for admittance." He also mentions his homesickness and wishes that he knew someone in the area.
The commission Anderson is awaiting is most likely his admission to the military academy at West Point. Anderson graduated from West Point near the top of his class in 1825.
Alexander Ferguson Anderson collection.
