Note
Business letters. The first (MSS 121-D), dated 14 Feb. '95, begs Greene "to postpone your journey to Canada untill Wednesday .... I never was so poor in cash. I am at a loss to make up the last assessment. If I get any relief you shall share it."
The second (MSS 121-E) is not included in Political correspondence and public papers of Aaron Burr (Princeton, 1983). "I am still moneyless .... I fear Mr. Strong is not in cash to pay my last assessment...." and he encloses a letter of credit for $5000. "From Canada you may write to me under cover to Mr. McCombe. Your letter need not be signed - not addressed to me. The direction may be blank - may be fictitious or may if you please be to R. Strong." A footnote in Political correspondence", vol. I, p. 123, identifies Strong as one Roger Strong, who served as Burrs agent from 1792-1795.
The third, 18 Feb., (MSS 121-F) mentioning a "proposed canal" and a "projected town,is published in Political correspondence cited above, vol. 1 p. 188-189. A footnote therein mentions that "only one bill for a new canal was introduced in the N.Y. legislature in this session, that presented ... on 25 March ... to facilitate ... navigation between Lake Erie and Lake Ontario."
The fourth (MSS 121-G) dated 8 June 1795 does not appear in Political correspondence. It concerns payments for [Henry] Drinker's lands in northeastern Pennsylvania: "In case he will not make good his second payment, and wishes to part with the land, I will take it off his hands, and pay his whole advances with interest in a year...." Drinker, like Burr, was a land speculator who had acquired considerable acreage after the American Revolution. For details of Drinker's land holdings, see Political correspondence, vol. 1, p. 208-209.
The fifth (MSS 121-H),dated 15 June '95 also concerns Burr's financial concerns and the Drinker land.
Watermarks: GR with crest, 1794 (14, 16, and 18 Feb. ; 15 June) the letter dated 8 June 1795 bears a similar crest but lacks the GR initials and the date. Not in Gravell. Foreign watermarks.
