"To Amos Toley now residing in Norwich these are to warn you immediately to depart this town ...."
"John Backus to serve and return this warning"
On verso: Backus' statement that warning was read July 6th, 1778, followed by a subsequent warning in another hand dated June 24th, 1779: "that the within mentioned Amos Tooley notwithstanding the within warning to Depart the Town still resideth in Norwich ...."
Toley [or Tooley] was probably suspected of being a loyalist.
