This is a photographic reproduction of an engraving of Washington. Three quarter length, to right, seated at table, in uniform. The Eagle of the order of the Cincinnati hangs from the left lapel of his coat. Dress sword rests on right arm, while right hand holds a document, the rest of which is on the table, partly covered by left hand. A drawn curtain shows an encompment in the distance. On a table to the right is a cocked hat. Below, surrounded by the title, is an eagle displayed with shield and ribbon inscribed: "E Pluribus Unum." Border 2/16. Stipple.
This is photographic reproduction of a verson of an engraving by David Edwin after a painting by Bartoli, identified as #788a in Hart. It differs from the original by the addition of "Published by D. Kennedy, 228 Market Street, Philad.a" below the title. This photographed copy of the engraving belongs to the Yale Art Gallery in New Haven, Conn. It was photographed, and reduced, for the Yale Art Gallery, by Joseph Szaszfai.
The library has copies of the Galland version of the original Bartoli and Edwin plate, #789 in Hart, on which the title has been changed to honor John Barry, etc., and a rosette has been added to the cocked hat. The first variation, #789a in Hart, is characterized by the removal of the reference to the publisher, "By John McElwee", and the substitution of "by Ferrai & Dupin
Baltimore." It is catalogued as P&E L1958.78. The library has a hand colored copy of the second variation of the Galland engraving, #789b in Hart, on which any reference to a publisher has been removed. It is catalogued as P&E L1975.70 .
