"While I lament the imbecility of the treasury of the United States which prevents the payment of my warrant in your favor, I respect your zeal which induces you to perform an expensive tour of duty, without any assistance from the public." This probably refers to North's willingness to accept the position of Inspector of troops.

Provenance: sold at auction "by order of the present owner, William M. Austin ... January 30, 1929" See the catalog, Personal relics of Baron von Steuben together with the revolutionary papers of William North aide-d-camp- to Baron von Steuben: New York, American Art Association, 1929. This letter is lot 59; a penciled note in margin indicates the letter sold for $20.
Both Knox and North were original members of the Society of the Cincinnati.
William Morris Austin, who apparently inherited the letter, was a direct descendant of William North.
