Note
Pinckney is glad to learn from Gerry that the latter will be joining him and John Marshall at the Hague; he also laments the difficulty of communications..
"The French minister at this Republic has directions to grant us passports.... The negotiations at Lisle proceed very slowly. There is a greater probabililty that hostilities will commence between the Emperor & France than that the definitive articles will be signed
Pinckney, Marshall, and Gerry were named by President John Adams commissioners to France after Tallyrand refused to recognize Pinckney as the U.S. ambassador.
