Silvey, Nov. 14th 1863" & penciled notes by Whitney: "Lewis Washington ... lived ... at Charlestown Va - 12 miles from Harpers Ferry. He owned a large number of books & other articles of interest which formerly belonged to ... At the time of the John Brown raid upon Harpers Ferry, Lewis Washington was seized as a hostage." (Lewis Washington was the great-grand-nephew of George Washington)
Author's inscribed presentation copy to George Washington (ms. inscriptions on half title: "George Washington Esqr. with respectfull [sic] compliments from the author."

This work is entered on the inventory of Washington's library taken at the time of his death in 1799 as "Wests Discourse, 4to, $2.00" (published in "Inventory of the contents of Mount Vernon 1810" (1909) p. 18), but it was misidentified by William Lane in the Appendix (Inventory of Washington's library) of "A catalogue of the Washington collection in the Boston Athenæum" (1897) p. 501.
Affidavit on parchment signed by Henry A. Whitney, December 1864, about the later history and ownership of the book is folded & inserted into a cut slit on 1st front free endpaper.
