Three quarter length, to right, seated at table, in uniform. The Eagle of the order of the Cincinnati hangs from the left lapel of his coat. Dress sword rests on right arm, while right hand holds a document, the rest of which is on the table, partly covered by left hand. A drawn curtain shows an encompment in the distance. On a table to the right is a cocked hat with rosette. Below, surrounded by the title, is an eagle displayed with shield and ribbon inscribed: "E Pluribus Unum." Border 2/16. Stipple.
This is a modified copy of an original plate by the engraver David Edwin, identified as #788 in Hart (see P&E L2010F199 MP). On this Galland version, #789 in Hart, the title has been changed to honor John Barry, etc., and a rosette has been added to the cocked hat. This first variation of #789 in Hart is characterized by the removal of the reference to the publisher, "By John McElwee", and the substitution of "by Ferrai & Dupin
Baltimore." The library has a hand colored copy of the second variation of this engraving, #789b in Hart, on which any reference to a publisher has been removed. It is catalogued as P&E L1975.70
