Begins: Upon my arrival to this town Gentlemen, I thought myself fortunate in an opportunity to meet with you and from your so kind welcome I desire an additional, most lively satisfaction.
The audience was possibly a group of soldiers, perhaps even members of the Society of the Cincinnati ("While reviewing the events in which we had a common share" and "Happy in the esteem and good wishes of brother officers" -- paragraph 2)
